As Dads get ready to show off their culinary skills for Father’s Day, Equifax takes a look at the cost of BBQs
In 2017, the UK was Europe’s leading BBQ nation, hosting over 135 million barbecues.1With good weather on the horizon, 2018 could be another bumper year. When it comes to a winning Father’s Day gift, a decent BBQ is hard to beat. But it’s important that budgets aren’t burnt for the sake of a sizzling sausage. The average BBQ now costs UK consumers around £41 in food, up from £16 five years ago, making it a costly summertime activity2 even before factoring in the price of the equipment.
Equifax has taken a snapshot of BBQs to suit every budget. From the £2 disposable pack, to the state of the art all singing and dancing kit, this shows what’s on sale at a range of price levels.
“Despite the unpredictable nature of the British weather, we’re still the top BBQ nation in Europe, beating Germany into second place,” explains Lisa Hardstaff, credit information expert at Equifax. “And the range of BBQs now available is mind-boggling. No longer is it just a case of a few coals and a grill.
“Dads generally like to think they are kings of the BBQ so Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to splash out on a new set. Whatever you do, don’t’ get carried away. Set a budget and choose a barbecue to suit the space you have, and consider how often it’s going to be used. No matter how much people decide to spend, a BBQ is always going to be at the mercy of the great British weather, so best to get grilling whilst you can.”
