Why switch?

You could benefit from:

  • Switching Bonuses: Many banks offer cash incentives (e.g., £100–£200) for moving your primary bank account to them.
  • Earn more from your money: Some accounts pay interest on money you keep in your account, helping your balance grow over time.
  • Lower Overdraft Fees: If you regularly dip into your overdraft, switching to a provider with a lower interest rate could save you money.
  • Packaged Benefits: Access to mobile phone insurance, travel insurance, or breakdown cover for a monthly fee.
  • Better Banking Apps: Moving to a provider with smart budgeting tools, instant notifications, and spending analytics.

Which type of current account works best for you?

If you want to apply for a new bank account, there are several different types available on the market.

Standard Everyday Accounts

Free to use for basic day-to-day banking. Usually comes with a contactless debit card, an app, and an optional overdraft.

Packaged Bank Accounts

You pay a monthly fee in exchange for perks such as travel insurance, car breakdown cover, and exclusive cashback offers.

Reward / Cashback Accounts

Accounts that pay you cashback on your household household bills (Direct Debits) or everyday debit card spending.

Basic Bank Accounts

Designed for individuals with thin files or low credit scores. These accounts provide a debit card for spending and withdrawing cash, but do not offer overdraft facilities or chequebooks.

Switching current accounts with an overdraft or bad credit

It is entirely possible to switch banks if you are currently in your overdraft, provided your new bank agrees to offer you an overdraft limit that covers your existing debt. If you have a low credit score, you may not be approved for an arranged overdraft with a new provider. In this case, your switch may be declined, or you may be offered a "Basic Bank Account" without a credit facility.

Always check the Representative APR of any overdraft before you switch.Compare current accounts

Pros and cons of switching current accounts

Advantages of credit cards

  • The CASS Guarantee

The switch takes just 7 working days, and if anything goes wrong, the CASS Guarantee ensures you aren’t left out of pocket for any missed payments or fees.
  • Financial Incentives

You can take advantage of cash bonuses, cashback, or competitive savings rates.
  • FSCS Protection

All UK-regulated banks protect your deposits up to £85,000 under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

Disadvantages of credit cards

  • Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for switch bonuses, you usually need to meet strict criteria, such as paying in a set amount (e.g., £1,000+ a month) and transferring at least two active Direct Debits.
  • Credit Score Impact

Opening a new bank account usually results in a "hard search" on your credit file. Doing this too often in a short period can temporarily lower your credit score.
  • Overdraft Risks

If your new provider charges a higher Representative APR on overdrafts than your current bank, borrowing could become more expensive.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The Current Account Switch Service (CASS) is used by over 50 UK banks and building societies. It is safe and comes with a guarantee that ensures any misdirected payments are forwarded to your new account automatically for at least 3 years.

No. If you use the full Current Account Switch Service, your new bank will arrange for all incoming payments—including your salary—to be automatically redirected to your new account.

Yes, there is no legal limit to the number of bank accounts you can hold. However, you can only use the Current Account Switch Service to fully transfer and close an old account. If you want to keep your old account open, you will need to apply for a new account separately and move your payments over manually.

When you formally apply for a new current account, the bank will perform a hard credit check, which leaves a mark on your file and can cause a small, temporary dip in your credit score. However, provided you manage the account well, your score should recover quickly.
